Pregnant Diabetics

I’ve been doing some research on pregnancy and diabetes. It seems that the American Association of Diabetes no longer discourages women who are diabetic from thinking about becoming pregnant.
Baby and Hands
You should know that there are still higher risks for babies of mothers who have diabetes. But, you can still have a healthy pregnancy and baby if you are fastidious in your care. Close monitoring of your glucose levels, careful diet habits, and excersise, much like mothers without diabetes can give your baby a great chance at healthy development.

Diabetic Friendly Granola Recipe

Yummy Goodness, Without The Extra Sugar

I love granola. Toasted, crunchy, and sweet it is versatile and perfect for anytime snacking. Most home-made recipes are full of sugar, though. While I know that regular sugar is fine for most healthy diabetics in small quantities, the amount called for in most recipes would make the most lenient doctor or nutritionist go into fits.

Can’t say that I blame them. Brown sugar, white sugar, honey, and a big dose of molasses makes home-made granola a big no-no. In the following recipe, I have replaced most of those with (mostly)natural alternatives. Feel free to experiment until you find the perfect fit for you and your taste. More →

Diabetes and Pregnancy : Personal Story

Pregnant ShadowI have to give you, my readers an apology. The past few weeks have been rough here due to personal issues. Normally a blogger would post ahead, but I was unable to. I wrote a few posts back concerning depression and I have to admit, I know first hand about the problems even a mild case of depression can cause your life.

In what I think was my first or second post here, I spoke about how a mistaken diagnosis plunged me and my family into a whirlwind of depression and obsession over diabetes. A little over a year and a half ago, one of my trips to the OB/GYN ended up with a diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes. After a day of blood draws the diagnosis was found to be incorrect but it left me with an almost insane fear of this condition striking here at home.

Veganism is popular and healthy

I need to start this off by saying that I am not a Vegan. My family eats more vegetables than meat based dishes, though we do consume meat. When I share vegan and vegetarian recipes, I am not condemning meat eaters at all!

Veganism has gained a lot of popularity among the health and eco-conscious. With the issues that elevated protein can cause in diabetic, I thought it may be a good idea to share recipes all diabetics can incorporate into their diet. So, if you are a vegan/vegetarian diabetic, this recipes is dedicated to you!

Natural Foods vs Processed

I think I have made it pretty clear that I am not a fan of putting things into the body that is not natural. A few days ago, I got into a pretty heated debate with someone over the recent ‘advances’ in medicine and diet. Their stance was that because of the refining of foods, the addition of preservatives, and other non-natural methods of food enhancement, we had come to a point where we no longer needed herbs and other natural remedies/foods.

I had a hard time following the point of the conversation on their side. It was beyond me how anyone could credit harmful items with the discovery of healthful ones. Or how the idea could be planted on someone’s head that natural things were bad for them. One thing that struck me as hilarious was this statement:

Diabetes and Depression

Emotions Affect Diabetes

For hundreds of years, medical practitioners had believed there was a direct impact on one’s health from emotions. Today we understand that overall mental health is important to the health and well being of everyone.

Have you ever met someone with severe depression? Often people sufferering from severe depression may seem irritable, withdrawn, tired, and even their personal care (may) suffer. Being diagnosed with diabetes is a stressful, life changing event. Depending on the personality and the way an individual deals with stress, their health may suffer and spiral downwards quickly.
